Prashant Bhushan owns about 15 acres of land allotted to him by the state govt to open an educational institute.
NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party finds itself in yet another controversy as its leader Prashant Bhushan on Monday was indicted by the Himachal Pradesh government for misusing a land allotted to him by the state government, Times Now reports.
According to the report, the Supreme Court lawyer owns about 15 acres of land in Himachal Pradesh. The BJP government in 2010 had allowed him to buy a tea estate to open an educational institute at Kandwari near Palampur in Kangra district.
However, the current Congress government in the state charges that the land has been misused by the AAP leader.
Bhushan rubbished the allegations, saying the Congress is trying to target him for taking on the Himachal CM Virbhadra Singh.
The Congress, in the opposition in 2010, had accused the Prem Kumar Dhumal-led BJP government of violating statutory provisions in extending favours to Bhushan and enabling them to purchase land.
According to the state's laws, land-use of a tea garden cannot be changed.
It was alleged that the land, worth several crores of rupees in Palampur in Kangra district, was given to an educational society, comprising members of the Bhushan family, for just a few lakh rupees.
Bhushan is not new to controversies. Earlier, he had said that a referendum should be carried out in Kashmir on whether or not the Indian Army should be deployed in the Valley to deal with the security situation there.
The remark sparked a huge political row. However, AAP leaders distanced themselves from his views.
Kejriwal later said that he did not agree with Bhushan's views. (With inputs from agencies)
