The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from Anandpur Sahib, Himmat Singh Shergill, has refused to accept police security for campaigning.
In a letter addressed to Harbir Singh Atwal, Ropar Deputy Superintendent of Police, Shergill said his party was against VIP culture and not interested in using security as status symbol.
The police had sent two security officials to his residence this morning. “I have written to the police authorities concerned against the security as well as telephoned them,” he said.
Shergill said instead of providing security to politicians and other VIPs, police personnel should be deployed to protect the common people, prevent accidents, regulate traffic and prevent crimes.
Only then could an atmosphere of security provided to the society as a whole, he said.
