Kejriwal meets Shinde to ‘fix' erring policemen

To hold dharna outside Home Ministry if cops are not suspended

New Delhi, January 17
The standoff between the Delhi government and the Delhi police continued even as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to suspend four police officials on charges of non-cooperation and lapses in duty. The Delhi police chief has refused to effect the suspensions as demanded by the state government.

Trying to build pressure on the Home minister, Kejriwal, who was accompanied by Education Minister Manish Sisodia, said they would hold a protest outside the Home Ministry on Monday, if the suspension orders were not issued by then.

"To check the increasing crime rate in Delhi, some strict action needs to be taken against the police officers who do not take their duty seriously. We have demanded suspension of the accused police officers, else we will sit on a dharna outside the ministry," Sisodia said.

Women and Child Welfare Minister Rakhi Birla and Law Minister Somnath Bharti had conducted raids in Khirki extention (South Delhi) and the Sagarpur area (West Delhi) respectively on the night of January 15. They later accused the Delhi police of not cooperating with the government.

Lieutenant Governor (LG) has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incidents of raids by Delhi ministers. The order came after Kejriwal and Police Commissioner BS Bassi held a meeting at LG's official residence. Rakhi Bidlan, Somnath Bharti, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi and Special Commissioner (Law and Order) Deepak Mishra were also present at the meeting.

Retired judge BL Garg would inquire into the matter and submit his report within 30 days, Sisodia said while addressing a press conference later. "Their suspension is necessary, otherwise there will be a problem in the inquiry… Our government won't keep quiet. This is not Sheila Dikshit's government. The government has changed. We will take action whether or not the Delhi police were under us," he said.

We'll take action: Sisodia

Their (the policemen who allegedly did not cooperate in raids by two AAP ministers) suspension is necessary; otherwise there will be a problem in the inquiry… Our government won't keep quiet. This is not Sheila Dikshit's government. We will take action whether or not the Delhi police were under us.
